Chess is a learning tool that just happens to be a game. It is a classic game of strategy invented on 6th century in India.
Nowadays, most countries include chess in the school curriculum. They found out that there is a significant correlation between the ability to play chess well, and spatial, numerical, administrative, directional, and paper work abilities. Learning Chess has a positive influence on the development of both numerical and verbal aptitudes.
Chess is a great game parents can use today to teachtheir children life skills that enable them to deal effectively with the demand and challenges of life. There are 6 listed life skills based on the WHO in 1999 (see listed below).
Life Skills
1. Decision-making & problem solving
2. Creative and critical
3. Communication and interpersonal skill
Chess is often considered not just a game of strategy and skill but also as a form of communication. The way players interact with each other through the movement of pieces on the board reflects various aspects of effective communication.
4. Self-awareness and empathy
5. Assertiveness and equanimity
6. Resilience and coping with emotion/ stress
Now let’s see this game again of Bird – P. Morphy in London 1858
Now, Morphy can communicate with 4 things: First, to himself. Second to his opponent, third to his pieces and last, among the pieces
First, Morphy was communicating himself what is his plangiven in the complex position. Most of the styles of champions are attackers. So, he attacked the White King. In life, every time we make a decision we are communicating to ourselves based on our plan and lifestyle.
Second, Morphy looked at his opponent’s moves, body language. He saw the Bird steepling his hands, means Bird was confident at the time so Morphy must concentrate on the game. Just like in life, we can communicate through non-verbal, if we see someone who steepling his hands he is confident in that matter.
Third, Morphy was talking about his pieces, his Rooks werein the open files, his Queen on other side and his dark Bishop was active. So he can attack his opponent by numbers. In life, we must communicate well to our friends, stakeholders and family (resources) to become successful and happy person. Miscommunication will lead to failures and unhappiness.
Fourth, Morphy was communicating to opponent pieces. Can he depend the position? No. Then he found a paradoxical move Rxf2 and Qa3 that can win the game. Just like in life, Is this a good opportunity for us? We examine and analyze it, if ok, we accept it and become successful in life.
In essence, playing chess can enhance one's communication skills by fostering strategic thinking, decision-making abilities, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. By drawing parallels between the dynamics of the game and real-life interactions, individuals can improve their communication effectiveness both on and off the chessboard.
