Amin Bassem is a professional chess player and licensed doctor. He is a top African chess player with 2719 rating and seven times African chess champion. He is called as “Surgeon on Chessboard”.
He was born on September 8, 1988 at Tanta, Egypt. He learnedchess at the age of 6 with his father.
In 1999, He won the ArabYouth U-10, U12 the following year and U14 on 2001 & 2002.
From 2005, he won the Arab Youth U20 for 3-consecutive years.
In 2006, he achieved his Grandmaster title by winning the African Junior Chess Championship
and he was ranked 3rd in the world youth U18.
In 2007, he won the 17th Abu Dhabi Open with 7/9 points ahead with strong grandmasters.
Amin has had notable successes in his chess career, including winning the African Individual Chess Championship multiple times. In 2009, he got his 1st African chess title with 7/9 points, 1-point ahead ofAdly Ahmed, he also won in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022 and lastly 2024. He has also represented Egypt in several Chess Olympiads, where he has consistently
performed well and many outside international tournaments.
In 2012, he graduated from Faculty of Medicine at TantaUniversity.
In addition to his playing career, Bassem Amin is also known for promoting chess in Egypt and across Africa. In 2015, he acquired the FIDE trainer license and renew until 2026 having the privilege to conduct chess training. He has been involved in coaching and mentoring young chess players, helping to develop the next generation of chess talent in the region.
In 2019, he got his highest rating of 2719 in January FIDErating list, making it the highest African player who reached above 2700.
