The 3rd Cebu Open Chess Standard Tournament 2024 made an exciting mark in the chess calendar from December 19-22, 2024, and has captured the attention of chess enthusiasts in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, bringing together 80 enthusiastic participants to the bustling venue of Gmall Cebu with its intense matches and strategic brilliance. This 9-round (1 hr + 30 increment) open tournament has become an electrifying battleground for 2 International Masters, 2 AGM, 1 AFM, seasoned players, and ambitious newcomers alike.


As we enter the fourth round, two formidable players have emerged at the top of the leaderboard: IM Rico Mascarinas and IM Torben Sorensen, both with an unblemished score of 3/3, together with other 7 players including AGM Venancio Loyola Jr, AGM Mark Mangubat and others. Their performances have been nothing short of spectacular, showcasing exceptional chess prowess and strategic depth.
IM Rico Mascarinas: A local favorite, Mascarinas has been a constant presence in the chess circuit. Known for his aggressive, tactical play, his remarkable ability to control the board and anticipate his opponents' moves has earned him well-deserved victories in the first three rounds.
